Blogging, journaling, note taking and everything else.
I've had a few blogs over the years, been and gone now but recently I decided to have another go. But with maybe a different mindset and outlook on life and things and stuff and all that
I've been thinking about this blogging thing, journal writing, note taking or what ever else you want to call it. Why do people blog? Well many reasons I guess, once it was sort of an online journal to put your thoughts and ideas online. Now the focus seems to be more on making money than informational content. Don't get me wrong here, there is nothing wrong with making a money from your writing, but it is getting harder to find good content, or wade through the never ending sea of advert popups, auto-play, flashing banner ads (Yes they are still around trust me) and really it has just become a mess on a page.
Did monetisation damage the blog and quality content? Hmm, I don't think it damaged it but it did flood the the Internet with a lot of rubbish. Allot of blogs became, or were created as advertising platforms, where as you read through the post you realise that it is one carefully written advert. You see this allot in print magazines these days too, of course the only way some of these magazines survive now, is to be come one big book of adverts disguised as informational articles.
How should I use this blog thing?
I've looked at a few Blogs, and online journals and looked at a few concepts like The digital garden idea, where you journal ideas and interests that evolve and grow over time to help you do the same, sort of note taking but on public platform. There is allot more to the digital garden on the technical side such as By-directional Links! Ouch that hurt my head reading that article. But interesting and something I may want to explore in the future.
I do like the idea of Luhmann's zettelkasten a practice of taking brief thoughtful notes and categorising them into larger more complex ideas. I find it fits in with the Unix philosophy and K.I.S.S concept, “Small well formed ideas combined together to become powerful intuitive ideas”
So, The digital garden or something similar does interest me and maybe something I may look at in the future. The Luhmann's zettelkasten concept also appeals to me and in a way is what I do now. I write brief text notes and put them into folders. Ideally I could just upload those folders onto a server and be done with it, everything is categorised in to folders - easy to find easy to read. What more do you want?
Fore now I think I will keep writing on this platform, my notes, thoughts and ideas and the occasional plug for cool things I love and use like for instance Ubuntu. I'm not going to stress about advertising, money, how many posts I can do in a week and how many hits I get. I just don't care, if someone finds me they find me, and if something I have written interests them in anyway then that is great! And if it doesn't, well that's fine too.
To note, I'll try not to rant or wave my hands about to much, I don't like reading rants and i don't think you do either. But I can't promise that I wont waffle on about things though, I'm known to go off in tangents at times, apparently it is a trait of being dyslexic.
